Kids and Sports
Well, 12 year old Football Practice has begun. My Tween began "playing" last year......maxing out at 13 downs in One game.
Europeans probably don't realise that most games have maybe, 60-40 downs.
Anyway he didn't play much, and why he wanted to return is something of a mystery and a little annoying in that the time and effort to drive him around to games that he hardly plays in seems a waste.
However, I'm DOING IT. Last year I did It All, may as well do it this year.
Went to go watch him practice last night. He looks like the shortest player on the team, and is certainly the slowest....BUT
BY GOD he has a HUGE HEART>

That huge heart can compensate for his size. Think, Rudy.

Re: Kids and Sports
Thats cool Scott. I think it's important that you are supporting your kid, many parents don't bother.
I love watching my kid play sports.

Re: Kids and Sports
Newsflash.
I picked Adam up tonight form practice....he wasn't very hot and sweaty.
I immediately knew what happened: He'd skipped practice. But he wouldn't admit it. Then later on he came into my office with this hound-dog look, and said the running was too much, and his pads didn't fit, and were chaffing him and HE WANTED TO QUIT!!
Bah...he's a great kid. I'm not gonna rock his boat over football. I told him he oughta talk to the coach tomorrow, let him know the problems, and then if he still had to quit, find out how to turn in his stuff. I also told him he's going to have to continue with SOME excersise program, regardless if its sports related, and that GRADES in school were My Big Deal.
Oh well. I really did feel bad for him, trying to keep up with much bigger boys.

Re: Kids and Sports
The cool thing is that he came to you in the first place and fessed up Scott, obviously you're doing something right as a father, c00d0s.
It is heartbreaking though when a child feels down about not fitting into something regardless of what that activity may be.

Re: Kids and Sports
I am sorry it didn't turn out good for him. I hope he finds something he can get into. Did you ever look into martial arts? They are good at building self esteem and since it isn't a team thing he can work at his own pace. I love doing it and so did my son when he was in it. A busy college life is the only thing keeping him from doing it still.

I'd love to get him into martial arts. I'm also pushing wrestling.
Today I just had to speak to the Recreation Center Director. We both went to the same University, a rather odd coincidence considering where we live. At any rate, I expressed my concerns.
I have one kid that I should have gooten more involved with SOME sport, but he was never interested. Now he's been to jail.
I have another kid that really REALLY just wants to be a part of a football team. He doesn't want to make touchdowns, or necessarily play very much! He also doesn't want to run wind sprints. He's a couch potato (I say that in a Loving Way) and has flat feet and he's nearsighted, but he has decorated his room with football stuff!!
Anyway my point was to give her the "heads-up:" I want him to enjoy SOME sport, and if he can somehow make some deal with the coach...hey, whatever.....just wanted to try One More Thing before I stepped back. I'll find out tonight how things worked out.

I don't think a good parent can hear enough positive feedback about their parenting skills so you're very welcome and Thank You for being a good parent.
I'm sure your child will find something but even if he doesn't find a sport he can take up he will always have the memory that at the very least he always had dads support.
Thats' whats truly important!
