That is the paradox. Often they get very defeatist attitudes about their lives, yet at the same time they need support from people around them more than ever. In case of severe depression, medication may often be needed, as the chemistry in the brain may be malfunctioning. The best thing to do, is trying to get them to see a professional, but of course, do it in a sensitive way.

It is natural. It is hard to deal with people who can't see the bright side of anything. Sadly it is not the best thing for them either, sometimes they will hold grudges too, for not keeping in touch.
