Default The Big Talk

Most parents dread it and try to forget it but it doesn't detract from the fact that sooner or later,...

I'm not sure how this article comes across so please give me your honest critique but I can state my daughter and I already discuss this topic comfortably with each other.

As much as I hate the thought of her being intimate one day, I hate even more the thought of her not being educated on the topic prior to it happening.

I liked it. You do a good job stressing the importance of little talks. You also did not treat kids as miniversions of their parents.

The only "complaint" are the perhaps "not so family friendly" figures of speech you employ.

Ya I know what you mean. I find it difficult to sugar coat some of these topics because I really don't want to detract from the message I'm trying to convey.

As far as ICRA and Safesurf are concerned, our rating states that we can have mild sexual innuendo and some adult topics used in an educational manner. At no time did I apply to either body stating we were squeaky clean because it's unrealistic to assume so in a site like this.

I may however, send some of these more questionable articles to Family Friendly for a ruling because I would like to know whether or not if I'm walking a fine line.

It was a wonderful article, Duke! I think a child should be told about sex by parents, it's not a topic to shy away from. Young lives are forever changed if they get into something that they don't really have a clue about....

I do actually like the article, I just don't want to provide the information in an offensive manner.

The problem is, sex is a touchy topic and especially so when you use it in conjunction with young people.

indeed. And you need to read the article intelligently, else it may be designated as promoting promiscuity / porn.

I think it's not only important to discuss sexual behavior with your child, it's imperative. I'm personally not comfortable with the idea of my daughter being intimate with anyone but thanks to all these little talks spread out over years, I'm not afraid to discuss the topic with her.

My talk consisted of my dad telling me to "keep it in my pants" well after I started having sex *shrugs*.

Learned all I needed to know from school surprisingly.

This becomes the problem though because it is an important topic and as a parent, your dad was running on blind faith that you wouldn't screw with your future.

Funny how many parents balk at the idea of Sex Education being taught in school yet surprisingly little parents actually talk with their children about the birds and the bees.

I started early. My daughter came home from elementary school one day (I think second or third grade) asking me what it meant when someone puts his index finger of one hand through a hole between the thumb and pointing finger of the other hand. I was shocked that a boy that young would have a clue at all. We started our talks then. I feel comfortable talking about this with them. My son doesn't like to talk about it with me but I made him understand the importance of it all. I have stressed to both of them that I DO NOT WANT TO BE A GRANDMA YET! And they need a good education first.

I intend to talk to my daughter about this topic more this weekend but she did make a rather odd statement about it on the phone the other night. We were touching on this subject a bit and she mentioned that it was a bit odd that she's only heard this from me so far and not from mom much, if at all.

The other thing she brought up was that many of her friends have finally gotten the big talk from their parent/parents but a few of them are already in relationships at 12 years old.

Whether or not you believe/disbelieve in the big talk, I really don't think waiting until your child becomes interested in the opposite sex is a wise idea.
