In Montreal, you may not swear in French.

Also in Montreal, citizens may not relieve themselves or
spit on the street. Punishable by a fine of over 100
Canadian dollars.

In Beaconsfield, it is considered an offense to have more
than two colors of paint on your house.

In Toronto, you can't drag a dead horse down Yonge St.
on a Sunday.

The city of Guelph is classified as a no-pee zone.

There are several sites on the net which list strange laws which perhaps once made sense, given the times, but are now obsolete. I think that's where Fayebelle found these.

I used to the the town clerk in this stupid little town which still held on to their Charter of 1910. It had the dumbest laws in it regarding sewage, the expected behavior of ladies and 'how to treat your negro'.

Federal or State laws over-rides old local laws still contained in city, county or as in Canada, province, charters/books.

They are still on the books because originally each city/area had their own Charter. Many don't take the expense to go back and change them since they have to abide by the National Laws in effect now.

In Quitman, Georgia, it is illegal for a chicken to cross the road. The story behind it is that all citizens living in town had to keep their chickens contained on their own property...instead of chickens being all out in the road. It made PERFECT sense at the time...but sounds funny now.
