Me, too!
I think Heath Ledger was an AMAZING actor; I'm so sad he's gone!

Re: The Dark Knight
Andrew wants to see this movie VERY BADLY.
I'm concerned about Why?
What are the criminal aspects in the theme?

If you've ever seen the original Batman movies you'll know that they were really cartoony in nature. I think originally they tried to keep with the humor aspect of the series starring Adam West but darken them up a little.
Batman Begins was an entirely new take on Batman as it was quite dark and taken very seriously. There was no room for cartoon and you could tell they were taking the movie very seriously. They also added big name actors like Morgan Freeman, Michael Kaine, Liam Neeson, Christian Bale, Rutger Haur and Cillian Murphey.
I don't know what anyone else here thought of the movie but I can tell you that it simply blew me away. I wasn't expecting it to be presented in this manner at all and I thought they did a terrific job of making Batman look more human; something the original movies with Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, etc., failed miserably at IMHO. Batman Begins explained why Bruce became an orphan, how he studied the criminal element, how he learned to fight and why he chose Bats as his symbol.
Anyone who liked the first movie has been following the development of the Dark Night since early details were leaked (I know I have). Of course hearing Heath Ledger was the Joker only added to the excitement because he really was a terrific actor. I never did see Brokeback but I have seen Monsters Ball and A Nights Tale and thought he was great in both.
Also, anyone who saw Jack Nicholson act as the Joker in the original movies can't help but want to see this new take on the Joker. Jack Nicholson really did a terrific job so it'll be interesting to see how the Joker plays out now that the movies are being taken more seriously and using a different actor. Lastly, Jack Nicholson said in an interview that he actually warned Heath Ledger of the dangers of assuming the role of the Joker. Apparently the role is all consuming and there have been murmurings whether or not the Joker is the role that killed Heath Ledger.
Of course that's rumor but as you can see, there are many reasons to want to see this movie. I only hope Dwoing will want to see it in the theater because I simply can't wait to see it myself.

Re: The Dark Knight
Thanks Duke.
What worries me a little more about this Joker, opposed to others, is that in previews he seems to be a little more realistic as a mentally ill criminal, which is exactly the reason I think Andrew may want to see the movie.
Until he's stable enough to clearly distinguish factual from fictional behaviours, I'm trying to avoid books, movies, and any other media that has the heroic/insane/criminal theme.
But it sounds like a great movie for ME.

Re: The Dark Knight
I don't know if this was an isolated case, but I know of one person where the Matrix got completely interwoven with their psychosis, to a degree that was very dangerous.
Avoid freaky films when reality is freaky enough

I'd agree Scott; if you feel your son is easily influenced by abhorrent behavior in movies then I think your fears of him seeing it are valid. I heard today in one of the previews that this Joker is a troubling character in that how do you fight someone who truly doesn't care?
I think we won't see the level of humor that Jack Nicholson introduced, what we'll see in the Dark Night is of a more dark and sadistic nature.
If you are thinking of seeing it yourself though Scott you may want to check out Batman Begins first and form your own opinions of the movie. As I said earlier I simply loved it because it was what I believed to be a serious mix of story telling, character development, and action presented in a very Film Noir fashion. I simply wasn't expecting what I saw because I grew up on the Batman Series. It was a breath of fresh air to see a comic book character evolve into a symbol of crime fighting without the amusing anecdotes popular in all super hero movies including Spiderman, Superman, etc.

Yeah....I think Andrew's gonna pass on this one:
Quote:
This Joker's weapon of choice is the knife: He carries several, one of which he sticks in his victims' mouths as he tells them stories (all, apparently, lies) of how he got his own "smiling" scars before slicing their faces open. We never see him cut, but the stories—the brutal, mesmerizing stories—are enough. They are more than enough.
That said, I'm not going to detail every bit of violence seen onscreen in this not-really PG-13 movie. ....
What you might not know is that the Joker kills scores of folks, and all the death that surrounds him only seems to brighten his mood. Counting casualties doesn't convey how you might feel as you watch, and how you'll feel walking out when it's over. So I'll put things this way: The Dark Knight is not Iron Man, not Hancock, not even Hellboy II. This is a movie about a cartoon hero. But there's nothing cartoonish about it

So, it's playing this weekend and no woman friend will go to see this with me...and I want to see it SO badly! I heard a lot of young guys talking about going at work today, and it was all I could do to keep from inviting myself along..

I would go with you Luba. I love to go to the movies. I am not a big batman fan but still would enjoy it.

I WISH we could go together!
The women friends I have are more into the Love Stories and I honestly don't know of one that would want to see this as much as I do! I have male friends that I could have asked but it just wouldn't look good for a happily married woman to be asking that kind of thing. My husband just isn't into this movie, either!
So...I'll just wait for it to come out on Video and actually BUY it, instead of just renting.
