Who is/are your favourite author/authors? What books do you suggest should be read and why?

Default Re: Authors

I am a big fan of Balzac ("Lost Illusions" is a must), and Kafka (did not write that much. "The Trial" and "Metamorphosis" are must-reads). And those who cannot appreciate Dostoevsky ...

Balzac was a sheer genius of human psychology. A nice thing about his writings is that most stories are interconnected; in one story a character can be a poor student, whilst 20 years later we run into him as a Minister of State in a different story.

Kafka is realistic in an a very disturbing surreal way; it is hard to describe his works in a few sentence without such a wild contradiction.

Dostoevsky is similar to Balzac in the sense of a great understanding of human psychology.
