I wonder if there's any correlation between poor parenting and the cost of living? What I mean is that it's increasingly expensive to support a family so in order to do so we spend more and more time either at work, commuting to work or thinking of work.

Thanks, you've, for better or worse, encouraged me to remain on my soapbox!
"Poor" I think is ....subjective. I think the "cost of living" has never been easier. In no other period in human history have parents had as much free time to "parent"......... or not.
My theory is that we are not economically poorer, in fact the opposite, but a society less connected to our kids.

You both raise valid points. Real wages have been declining, thus if you are working in unskilled or semi-skilled fields then indeed the time for parenting is severely limited.
I even see the effects of the changed social attitude (mostly forced upon people) in rural Netherlands. Ten years ago the roads were not half as busy as they are now. You practically have traffic-jams in a little town in the middle of nowhere because so many people are travelling back and forth during all hours of the day.

Re: Young teens and dating
Parenting certainly has changed since I was a Child. I won't say "in my day", I just won't, I said I won't....anyway, then children were supposed to be 'seen and not heard'. Yes, that's the term allright! No wonder so many of us are messed up. One never really asked questions from parents, it was about rules and the strap. If you happened to ask a question about new feelings you were having, the parent turned red and wouldn't respond. Even a teacher would hit you with a ruler across the knuckles (I remember that happening when I was trying to print, I guess I was messy or something) or get hit with those pointers they always used for the blackboard. My Dad only strapped me one, can't remember why, I was such a good kid! Must have done something bad. I was terribly annoying to my brothers.

true, very true. Most of my friends never see there parents cause they are working. Mind you, most of them are glad cause most of them hate their parents with an ongoing passion.

I do hope that is because they are teenagers, and not because their parents are that evil.

Re: Young teens and dating
if dwoing had a boy friend this is what her mom would do
if dwoing had a boy friend this is how her dad would look
and after her parents did that, dwoing would go to school like this
why suffer?
