Default 'Child' marriages

I never thought I would EVER be saying this phrase "in my day when" but I am saying it now....

In my day it wasn't out of the ordinary for girls to be married at sixteen. A lot has changed since then...

How would you react if your sixteen-year-old daughter said she was getting married...or say your seventeen-year-old son?

I would be shocked, scared and hopeful that I could delay it some.

I wouldn't let them get married at that age no matter how much they think their in love. As far as I know, my daughter marrying under the age of 18 requires my consent to be legal.

Technically it is still possible in the Netherlands. But you will need the consent of the Queen / King. Happens in rare occasions, mostly pregnancies under 18 in religious communities. But is quite rare these days, as opposed to say 60-70 years ago.

I can't even fathom the idea. It just seems so rediculous!

This may be the opinions of many but i myself am 17 and will be proposing to my gf os 16 on the 31th of oct. You may also say that "however much in love they are it is wrong" but if you look at my forum in the adult section you will see that most couples older than me dont manage to survive something as serious as that. I am referring to the topic i am scared just so people have something to read. It is in the adults, pregnancies and birth section.

Speaking for myself IC, I'd prefer my daughter refrain from marriage until she's had time to finish school at the minimum. Of course this is my preference only as I ultimately have no control over what happens in her life, merely parental input that she can choose to obey or ignore.

Regardless of what happens in her life though, I'd still do my best to support her in all she does and if it finds her marrying young then I guess I'd have to be there for her.

That said, I don't necessarily have to like it which I'd also be honest about. In fact, I'm very upfront with her so there are little in the way of surprises between us.

Now i wish i had a relationship that like with the adoptive parents i had. In fact i wish i had parents that allowed me to do a few things my self. e.g decide what time i got to bed not 9:00 PM everynight even at my age. I wasnt allowed a gf and aload of other sily things. Then they took over to much by saying i would never be allowed to see my biological mother and brothers and sisters, so we had a fall out and now i live with my gf who i love very much and in 2 wweeks or so she will bemy fiance D i cant wait.

Sorry if i stept on anyones toes with my previous post.

Don't worry about that! One of the great things about being here on LS is that many of us can express our opinions, even if they differ with those of others. As long as it doesn't get heated and hurt someone, I believe it's okay !

No need to apologize about that man. I said I couldn't fathom it, not that you shouldn't do it. You seem mature for your age, which is good. Most 17 yr olds I know are just punks who think they own the world, you seem different. Good luck with everything!

Exactly, well put Weiser.

You never have to apologize for stating your opinion here IC so no worries. Think of us as an online family for you however with a few distinct differences:
  1. We don't hide our shortcomings, fears, beliefs or values.
  2. We do our best to embrace alternatives and varying opinions/input.
  3. We don't tell you what to do, we only offer suggestions if asked, the remainder of the time we offer an ear.
  4. We admit when we're wrong.
  5. We truly care about each other.
At the risk of sounding somewhat idiotic, I believe Lifesupporters has afforded me the best all around family experience I've had in life. Don't get me wrong, I have some truly great family members however, Lifesupporters has yielded the most concentrated amount of caring people whom I consider family.

I can only hope you feel similar.
