Default Abortion Pills / Parental Consent?

I copied this from an article I was reading. I don't know a lot of specefics but I thought it would be an interesting discussion. I'll include the points made in the article....I'm not at all sure I agree with all of them.

I thought some of you may have opinions on this:

There are people who think it's a wonderful idea for 16-year-old girls to be able to stroll into their local drug store and get a pill that will cause an immediate miscarriage or abortion. They think this "abortifacient" (yes, it is a derivative of the word "abortion"), should be available without a prescription and without the knowledge of the young girl's parents. Barr Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of this "morning after pill" is appealing the sensible decision by the Food and Drug Administration to not allow this gruesome drug to be sold over the counter. They want any female over 16 to be able to buy their product without their doctor's or parent's knowledge. The greed of the owners at Barr Pharmaceuticals in trying to make this product as available as aspirin and contact lens cleaner is disgusting. This is wrong on so many levels its difficult to decide where to begin, but we'll try.

This drug should never have been developed in the first place.

Doctors should not even be able to prescribe this barbaric pill.

Sophomores in high school -- sixteen-year-old girls -- should not be allowed to make this type of decision on their own without adult guidance.

The girl's parents must be informed?

The notion of having this drug on the shelf between the breath mints and hair care products boggles the mind.

How long before a black market develops for these pills?

And we haven't even touched on how having something like this available will encourage promiscuity, raise the rates of sexually transmitted diseases, and create other health crises for our children.

I don't agree with these pills being available to girls without a prescription and proper reason. It's not morally correct IMHO.

I do believe in having this pill for girls or women who get raped. Which is the reason why it should only be given by prescription or by a doctor in the hospital.

I'm neutral with this topic. Yes a retroactive abortion pill may be a morally compromised product but there certainly is a need for it. I'd rather have that pill than more unwanted pregnancies and horribly treated children with terrible parents who are usually still babies themselves.

At the same time Duke....can you imagine the physical reprocussions of a young girl going through this process several times and NOT telling her Mom or a parent? That's SCARY!

She shouldn't have to face something that traumatic and potentially dangerous by herself.

I also think it will become a bandaide in place of a condom.

the damage this pill could cause to a girl's uterus could be permanent. and i'm with Merika on this one. It could be used as an actual birth control like the birth control pill or condom. It's not safe.

I'm not against 'progression'.....but I do get annoyed when the medical community thinks they have the right to step over parental rights with the offer of ANY drug.

don't even get me started on the "overriding parents" issue. I have a lot of issues with that one these days. I totally agree with you Mireka

I agree. It should be a thread unto itself. If you don't start one...I will!

I'm not a woman and prolly have no right responding anyway. The only thing I can say is that if a woman relies on these pills instead of common sense then she harms herself. If she relies on nothing and has no common sense, the potential is there to harm someone else (a child) and all the other poor souls that actually care for the mother.
