My daughter is 9 and has some ideas about sex and does know a bit about drugs.
I am a bit fortunate as my daughter has 3 girl cousins that are younger, the same age, and much older. All of them have pretty good ideas as the oldest is now 14 and their all learning together.
I was just asking my daughter about how much she knows and we were laughing about it. Although we were laughing, it seems that she has a good idea of what it is without really understanding. I know that sounds stupid but talking about it as we are, very slowly and at times when she learns something new seems to work the best for me. I don't want to drop the whole concept on her like a bomb all at once.

It's funny in that it seems so much more comfortable to discuss this with a daughter than a son.
I'm with Star.....any suggestions?

Ask what your child knows and go from there. The chances are they know a little and that gives you a good place to start and also helps you not only break the ice, but learn of your childs comfort level in the topics IMO.

the books I used were like a story book (all cartoon drawings) and they were for both boys and girls. They're great books! Made those talks so much easier to do and it was just enough information for my kids at that time. They only had 1 question to ask after I read them the where did i come from book.
Now I do what Duke suggested. I answer their questions truthfully when asked. and there are a lot of them lately with my pre-teen!

I can't imagine what I would say to my 12 year old son that he doesn't already know NOW which he would even discuss with me.
I'm not sure how he got from 9 to 12 without me thinking about it.

I was going to tell a Sn00py story...but thought the better of it. I'll remind him of it and if he wants to post it....then he can tell his own story.
