I think it works the other way around too.
For example:
Before the advent of the internet and credit-cards, you did not have to be afraid of people robbing your bank-account with noone noticing it. If you would leave a kid alone, there would be no chance that the child would hand out information like that to strangers. Because it simply did not exist.
And what about all the dangerous appliances that are in the home? A lot of those are technological gadgets that did not exist 40 years ago. Some of those can be pretty dangerous.
If you do not end up accidentally doing something dangerous and harmful with the blender, there is no need to call the emergency number.
And don't forget that working patterns have shifted dramatically, which may well lead to an increase in time that the kids spend alone in home.
Internet will always be a tricky issue, as parental supervision is important. Within a matter of seconds you could be on some very dubious websites.
Everyone is much harder to reach, partly due and partly because of the advent of cell phones. Formerly one or two phone numbers sufficed, now more are required.
