I have heard of chopping it under water. I haven't figured out how to do that just yet without losing half the onion. I personally like the smell of onion. I like onions. I don't like the tears they bring but I wouldn't probably wear goggles to cut them. I guess I will just suffer with the teary eyes.

My gf does not even offer me the opportunity to cut the onions. That works too, although not as it should.

That would work but I have a hard time cutting onions while holding one of them. I prefer to use a cutting board. I almost chopped my thumb off once doing it the other way and prefer not to risk limbs to chop an onion. I will just suffer with the tears.

I don't think that would do too much. The problem is the spray from the onion when you cut it. Unless you cut it under water the spray is still there. Although I haven't tried washing the "living crap" out of it with cold water first. Next time I need to chop up an onion I may try that and let you know.

i've always cut onions under running cold water. i learned that trick in my early 20's. i forget who told me about it but it does work. I'll cut the onion into chuncks while under the tap then chop them on the board.

The reason why your eyes water isn't because it gets in your eyes, it's because it gets into your sinuses.
What happens when you cut an onion, acid is released into the air and we breath it in through our nose and whammo, the sinuses are attacked from stuff they don't like and in response to that, our eyes water.

Solution.......
While cutting onions, breath through your mouth and not your nose, most people tend to close thier mouth when doing something.

If your eyes water still, which is still very possible, take a few very deep breathes in through the mouth and this will help to clear the sinus distress.
Quite simple really. Hope this helps.
