Drinking and driving poem
This poem found it's way into my inbox today and I thought it would be a good idea to post it here.
I went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom
So I had a Sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
That I didn't drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.
I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right,
The party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight
I got into my car,
Sure to get home in one piece,
I never knew what was coming,
Mom Something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom, his voice seems far away.
My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
This girl is going to die.
I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive,
Now I would have to die.
So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell sister not to be afraid, Mom
Tell daddy to be brave,
And when I go to heaven,
Put Daddy's Girl on my grave.
Someone should have taught him,
That it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his parents had,
I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom
I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments,
And I'm so unprepared.
I wish that you could hold me Mom,
As I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say, "I love you,
Mom!"
So I love you and good-bye.

That was very sad
Drunk drivers get off too easy, they deserve life in prison if they kill somebody. I never have and never will drive drunk.

Re: Drinking and driving poem
I know this post is about 4 years old, but I have to say that it brought a tear to my eye.
Just out of curiosity - What are the penalties in your area for drinking and driving?

Re: Drinking and driving poem
In BC unless you run over about 400 people you'll likely only get a 24 hour roadside suspension.

Really? I asked the question for 2 reasons: 1 because I was curious. and 2 because the company that I work for manufactures the breath testing equipment for DUI offenders and Law Enforcement. We are world wide.
Because I work in the IT department and do not work with the product personally, I am only famaliar with the laws of Ontario.
In Ontario the laws are:
A $600.00 dollar fine for a first, minimum 14 days jail for a second, or a minimum of 90 days in jail for a third. A Criminal Code driving prohibition will be imposed by the Court precluding operation of a motor vehicle anywhere in Canada for at least one year. Minimum automatic driver's licence suspension by the Ministry upon conviction in Ontario of 1 year for a first, 3 years for a second, lifetime for a third. There is a back on track course and fee required for licence reinstatement. Installation of an ignition interlock system is required after reinstatement (This is where our company comes in) There is an automatic administrative licence suspension for 90 days immediately upon arrest. If you drive while suspended in Ontario, you face harsh penalties.
This is based on a conviction for either impaired operation, over 80 mg/100mL, or refusal to provide a breath sample at the roadside.

Re: Drinking and driving poem
Maybe I was generalizing but I can only speak from the experience of those around me who've been busted at road checks. The worst I've seen so far is one guy had his license suspended for a few months (at least that's what he told me).

That may be the truth. He may have been just below the legal limit (which depends on the class of license that he holds) But had just enough alcohol in his system to tip the device. As a precautionary measure, his license may have been suspended and reinstated again without further penalty, but I would think that he was given a fine because of his actions.

Heartbreaking. I wonder if people will think twice if they read this poem.

Re: Drinking and driving poem
I know when I was living in Alberta it was pretty lax. My cousin got busted at a checkstop and they let him off with a 24 hr suspension and he had to leave his truck....big deal.
