Personally, I think once you have to begin questioning the motives of your S.O. -for ANY reason....the relationship is at an all time low....if even significant at all.
I think a lot of people play with love and it's feelings like it was a board game. If YOU aren't serious and your PARTNER isn't serious.....it is a JOKE.....not a RELATIONSHIP.
The person you love in your life is where you hide in refuge when the whole world crashes around you. If that person is part of the crash.....the whole point of a relationship looses it's meaning. If they are the source of the pain or wonderment or dissatisfaction.....they are no longer the answer or place of safety.
If someone wasn't my 'safe place'...then they just became part of the problem. Fixing that relationship would not be an issue. The issue would be getting out as fast as I could.
