If you've ever seen the original Batman movies you'll know that they were really cartoony in nature. I think originally they tried to keep with the humor aspect of the series starring Adam West but darken them up a little.
Batman Begins was an entirely new take on Batman as it was quite dark and taken very seriously. There was no room for cartoon and you could tell they were taking the movie very seriously. They also added big name actors like Morgan Freeman, Michael Kaine, Liam Neeson, Christian Bale, Rutger Haur and Cillian Murphey.
I don't know what anyone else here thought of the movie but I can tell you that it simply blew me away. I wasn't expecting it to be presented in this manner at all and I thought they did a terrific job of making Batman look more human; something the original movies with Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, etc., failed miserably at IMHO. Batman Begins explained why Bruce became an orphan, how he studied the criminal element, how he learned to fight and why he chose Bats as his symbol.
Anyone who liked the first movie has been following the development of the Dark Night since early details were leaked (I know I have). Of course hearing Heath Ledger was the Joker only added to the excitement because he really was a terrific actor. I never did see Brokeback but I have seen Monsters Ball and A Nights Tale and thought he was great in both.
Also, anyone who saw Jack Nicholson act as the Joker in the original movies can't help but want to see this new take on the Joker. Jack Nicholson really did a terrific job so it'll be interesting to see how the Joker plays out now that the movies are being taken more seriously and using a different actor. Lastly, Jack Nicholson said in an interview that he actually warned Heath Ledger of the dangers of assuming the role of the Joker. Apparently the role is all consuming and there have been murmurings whether or not the Joker is the role that killed Heath Ledger.
Of course that's rumor but as you can see, there are many reasons to want to see this movie. I only hope Dwoing will want to see it in the theater because I simply can't wait to see it myself.
