Actually, it's happening a lot here in BC in the lumber industry. Twenty-five years or so ago, my husband and a LOT of mill workers were told in the morning that it would be their last shift. We weren't prepared, same as most of the people that were working there. Many homes were lost, marriages broke up...devastating stuff. That's why I asked the question...Plan B may save a LOT of heartache! 
Since my husband and I live very modestly and our marriage, after years of ups and downs, was solid at the time, still is, I'm SOOO grateful to add; we just worked TO-gether on a solution. I was a stay-at-home Mom who decided to get a job and have been working ever since. My husband got another job as well, and we STILL live modestly. |
Certainly, in any case, a contingency plan is a good idea. Living modestly is also a good idea.
I'm just saying that I believe employers are becomming less inhumane: Rather than surprising thousands of people with layoff, they are planning downsizing so that the catastrophic results of sudden massive change are not as damaging.
