Apparently, up until the Great Depression Americans thought otherwise about marijuana. I'll see if I can find some online information about this deliberately hidden aspect of American culture. Thus it is a bit unlikely that the roots upon which the US were founded are the cause for the difference in attitude towards Mary Jane.
