Re: Grandpas and Grandmas
I'm closest to my mothers father, probably more than any other family member. He is my hero and I'm quite sad I'll never be able to have the experiences he has had in life. Although experiencing his wife, my grandmother is only a good thing when she cooks. other than that shes completely mad.
I would love to have his qualities and do the things he experienced but the world is a different and much more dangerous place now, as he keeps pointing out. That said he did fight in WW2 in a very dangerous job (then again what Job in war isn't dangerous?), was a policeman for 30 years afterwards and lived through the entire cold war so not sure what is more dangerous!
He's probably going to die soon, he is quite ill but too proud to accept or ask for help but the worst thing is his mind is still very sharp as his is memory (he's full of interesting stories from his travels and things he's done in his life, which is allot!) but everything else is falling apart. His wife and my mother tend to him regularly but he doesn't like the fuss.
When he goes I'll change my surname to his to keep the family name alive since he is the last male in the family and has a very old sussex surname which originates from anglo saxon times.
