That is a hard one. I think the best thing is to just be there for them and to let them talk. When my friend's husband told her he wanted a divorce she was devastated and I was at a loss as to what to say but I was there to listen and give my thoughts. She said it helped just to have me listen. She was there for me later when my heart was broken and even though I asked her questions she never tried to steer me in any direction, she mostly just listened and it helped tremendously just to know I had someone to unburden myself too and who would put up with my tears. There isn't much you can say.
