There's many reasons such as:
- joining to unlock hidden content from non-registered users
- to track important topics via e-mail updates
- bots
- to attempt a link back to their site via a forum profile or signature
...I'd also assume the number is roughly double for guests who just visit the site and read the updated content but will never register.
Personally, I don't understand the reason for re-visiting a site without registering and participating but I'm sure not everyone is comfortable with posting right away in a new forum. It may actually be tougher to post here given how close the members are to one another so it may add pressure to posting that first post.
