I'd rather hear them cry then see the mother or father hit the kid in the store. I've witnessed that way too many times. Tht's sickening.
Usually the kid is having a hissy fit because he/she can't get something they want (usually candy). Ever notice that all the candies are near the cash registers? that's where most of the crying happens.
When my kids were little, I used to warn them that we're going shopping and not to ask for anything. If they behaved in the store, then I would reward them with one of those candies at the cash. If not, I left the store and they got nothing. It worked for me most times.
