A couple things to take note of:

1. They weren't used to caffeine.
My mom didn't drink anything with caffeine for a long time, drank one can of coke and was up for like a day and a half.
I'm sure the effects on most people who drink caffeinated drinks regularly.

2. They weren't used to resistance training.
Whenever I start doing resistance or weights after not doing it for awhile, I'm really sore too, but that's only for about the first week.
The effects on muscles would probably go away fairly quickly if the person did this regularly.

I, personally, think there's a lot better solutions than caffeine, but that's just me.
I think I'll be sticking with my protein drink.
