Cat troubles... need help!
My gf, her sister (a.k.a. my bro's gf), my brother and I are moving in together in the next few days. The problem is girls have 4 cats and my brother has allergies, now I'm showing signs of having allergies as well, which I've never had before. Right now my eyes and nose are itchy as heck and watering a bit. Is there something I can take to help with this as it's driving me crazy and I love the cats, getting rid of them is not an option.
Also a couple other problems. There are 2 males and 2 females, all 'fixed'. Neo is the oldest and female, she's such a big suck but can take care of herself when the others bug her. Shadow is the oldest male, he's a brat but occasionally the biggest sweetheart, but he scratches everything and picks fights. Melody is the younger female, she's mated with Shadow before and had kittens but they've been taken apart and reintegrated so many times now that they don't get along. Blaze is the youngest male, he is Shadow and Melody's kitten, looks just like Shadow except he's a scaredy cat and a big baby.
The problem is that Shadow plays a hunting game with Melody all day long and terrorizes her, she spends all her time hidden in tiny spaces he can't get in and when she comes out, he attacks her, scratches and bites her. She's really sore all the time and won't let you pet her because she's hurting so much, which is really sad because she's the sweetest, most beautiful cat you'll ever meet. We've tried squirting Shadow with water when he starts hunting her or just getting in his way, but it's an all day thing and it gets really really tiresome after awhile. It's really hard to watch too because he's so nasty to her and she is always running and cowering everywhere she goes. Is there anything we can do to discourage this behavior? We don't really have the room or resources to keep them apart and it just seems to be getting worse.
The last problem (for now) is that I have a new couch I paid $1000 for and it's going into the living room of the new place, where the 4 cats will be. Shadow is going to scratch the life out of it and destroy it, like he does every other piece of furniture. He has scratching posts he can use, he gets squirted when he scrathes anything he's not supposed to, but he basically ignores everyone and does whatever the heck he wants. Short of getting him declawed, which has been discussed but the girls are really against, is there anything I can spray on the furniture so he'll leave it alone, or wrap around it? I don't want anything that's going to smell bad to the rest of us or stain my furniture but I have to make sure this cat doesn't destroy everything I move into the new place.
