What's really great about having military bases in Iraq is that it finally gives the U.S a foothold in the middle east to make a difference, we can finally break down social barriers and stigmas and put a different face on Americans than the one which makes us out to be just another western power dead set on conquering the middle east.
I was watching the Discovery channel about the Irianian hostage crisis back in the 80's and they said they had big problem trying to conduct a rescue of those people simply because they didn't have any way to get air support from the Red Sea, the helicoptors couldn't fly that far without some place to land and refuel. So we had to wait and hope they didn't kill all those people.
