Yes...but when that motto was adopted...the people who came to this country learned the language, embraced the Hodge podge of people. Now most of them, especially the ones coming from our southern border, want to turn this into a version of the country they just left. If they would learn the language and pay taxes then I don't think people would have half the problem with them that they do.
I don't know about other places...but the Mexicans and hispanics who live around here act as if WE OWE THEM SOMETHING because they come to live in our country, and 90% of them illegally! It chaps my arse. I can't stand to go to WalMart anymore because they go there in droves. They'll be 15 of them walking down an isle together and when they leave the shelves are empty!

It *was* a melting pot society at one time. Think about what a melting pot is: Separate ingredients melt together to form something solid and unified.
The term now is "salad society" because the ingredients DON'T mix - they stay separate and even the oil and vinegar dressing don't mix. They can be good, but they are not solid and they are not very fulfilling.
