This is something interesting my Mom told me as a transplanted German. People can move to America and become American...but no one can go to another country and lose their Americanism.
Maybe it's because relatively speaking...we are a new country. We didn't live thru decades of Crusade wars, Viking stuff and even any world wars on our own ground. Maybe we are still finding our spot....and in the meantime if we feel threatened.....we react like a teenager on the defense.
There's still a good in that... if only a pubescent patriotism....which isn't all bad. It has a nice purity and hope for all good things.
