I thought women hit their prime in their early 30's and for men it was at age 18 or so.

I'm pretty sure it's as Star said. The other thing to remember is that you've likely been with your partner for several years by the time the kids are gone and intimacy becomes less of a priority in your daily routine. I honestly think you simply adapt or get used to less intimacy as you grow older.
