I guess each situation has to be decided upon on a one to one basis. It depends on the family, the money and the reasons why the elderly person cannot take care of themselves any longer.
I would have a REALLY hard time sending one of my parents to the hand of strangers to take care of them. I would do all in my power to take care of them myself. However, I don't judge people at all for having to make another choice.
As for me personally being taken care of bymy family or being put in a home somewhere....I'd just as soon be put in a home. I wouldn't want them to end up resenting me for being a problem.
