Watching a friend make a decision you think is screwed up....is the same thing parents go through when trying to guide their kids.
I think it comes down to this though....it may NOT be the wrong decision for the person who made it for themselves. They know what they are willing to persue, what their priorities are and what their character is. Maybe being a great friend or parent...is letting them make their own choices and just supporting the choice....even if it wouldn't have been the right choice for us personally.
I think Vautrin pretty much said the same thing.
