If R is on and off with her bf / ex-bf / limbo-bf, it will probably be a mentally draining relationship, and once R's relationship is definitely over, she will have to take the time to collect the pieces and restore the damage. If it were otherwise, her heart would not be in the relationship.
If her heart is not in the relationship, she would probably not be good relationship material in the first place.
