There was a poll a while ago about the look of the forums and some people felt they looked too cluttered and confusing. This was the only short term solution I could come up with.
I didn't want anyone who came to the forums to view them collapsed as I felt that they would think this is a brand new site with categories but no posts due to collapsed forums. When there formatted that way, there's really no indication there's any content at all unless you look at the footer to see the number of articles and number of posts made. You can also get this info from the "Latest Topics" scrolling marquee on the left side of the page.
