I think it teaches kids responsibility but kids are flighty anyway, it's a fact of life. I sometimes have to remind my daugter to put on her shoes before we go outside, her shoes for crying out loud. The same goes for her with brushing her teeth, cleaning her room, etc.
Kids have a lot going on in their heads, I know I did. I too had to be constantly reminded to do what I knew I had to. I think it's just the way it is and part of your role as a parent.
The other thing to remember is their brains are developing at an alarming rate. They learn every day where as we've pretty much leveled off as adults. It's quite possible that there's simply no room for the day to day in there anymore as there's new stuff that's buried it from the classroom, peers, etc. A simple reminder also means you have to communicate with your children daily which isn't such a bad thing.
